Before you absorb “one small extra”

Price the change

Example: extra crew time, materials, and two more equipment days on a water-related job. Replace these sample numbers.

The math behind the answer

Extra cost = crew-hours × loaded hourly cost + extra materials + extra equipment. Required total price = all direct costs ÷ (1 − target gross margin). Additional price needed = required total price − original contract price, with a minimum of zero.

The target applies to the entire revised job. This can also reveal a shortfall in the original quote. Gross margin excludes overhead and taxes; the result does not establish contract rights, insurance reimbursement, or customer authorization. Document a scope change and agree the price before proceeding.
